About kulas

Individuals within the sangha take on the responsibility and decision making around specific areas of the GBC’s work. Such individuals negotiate a mandate for this with the council. This mandate is a written agreement between them and the GBC council about the range of the work and the extent of their responsibilities. The named mandate holder(s) are the ones who are accountable to the council for this area of work. They often form a kula of other sangha members to help them. The kulas use the GBC’s consensus model when decisions have to be made.

About working groups

Working groups are formed to directly aid in the work of the council. They do not have independent decision-making powers. These areas of work are often directed by the council through their visioning and strategy making processes. The working groups are tasked with implementing the council’s decisions in specific areas. Usually, there are written policies or terms of reference that determine what the working group does. Working groups have a convenor who organises the group. They are made up of sangha members with the levels of skill, experience and interest to carry out the agreed work.

About other informal teams within the GBC sangha

Sangha members regularly form regular small informal teams to offer sangha activities in the centre. They are usually experimenting in offering new opportunities for the sangha and sometimes the public to practise together. These initiatives are agreed with the co-chairs who are guided by the council’s dharma pathway and vision for the development of the centre.
